[Food Tasting Invitation]

All the way from Macau, Fu Lin Men Dou Lao is all about bringing the freshest seafood to their consumer. Although similar to Hai Di Lao, Consumers here are served in individual pot instead so that individually, one can customize the soup base and ingredients to their own liking. "豆捞" is actually a play sound of the word and actually means "都捞". Signifying each individual scooping Wealth, Fortune and Treasure, into one's own plate and consume in. They are also the first hotpot restaurant in Singapore that serves Sashimi.

The highlight of their menu lies in the variety of soup bases. There are 9 different soup bases for you to pick from – Ma-La Spicy Pot, Chinese Herbal Pot, Mushroom Pot, Tom Yam Soup, Vegetarian Pot, Tomato Soup, Chestnut Chicken Pot, Bone Soup Pot and Secret Recipe Seafood Pot. The smart advantage of implementing individual pot is that, when you come with a group of friends, everyone can order different soup bases and you get to taste all of it.

I chose the Bone Soup pot ($10) because I prefer lighter soup base, and this is the top recommended soup base. After all, once the seafood and other ingredients are thrown in, the broth will be thick enough. They are very generous with the ingredients used to brew the broth, chinese herbs are used in most of the soup bases as well.

They have such a wide range of sauces (24 types) for you to pick from, I highly recommend their signature sauce. The staff will mix the sauce for you; it comes in spicy and non-spicy option. I could only make out peanut sauce and sesame oil. But no matter what other secret sauce they mix in, this sauce is the best match for hotpot dishes. And yes, they are very secretive with the ingredients used for this sauce.

We kickoff the meal with the appetizer dish – Cold Black Fungus Salad ($6), a savory dish that stimulates the appetite. However, if you’re not good with chilli (like me), get ready a glass of water. The chilli padis really bring on the spiciness. Food ordering is made easy with their interactive menu through tablets installed on every table. The e-menu is easy to navigate, very user-friendly.

Fried Fish Skin ($8) – Crispy but a little tough to munch on, taste better when dip into the signature sauce.

Assorted Vegetables ($12) – A huge bowl of assorted vegetables, suitable to share among 2 to 3 persons. Mushroom lovers will love their Assorted Mushroom ($14) that comes with 6 different varieties.

Assorted Beancurd Platter ($6) – Comes in 3 different types: Normal, Greentea & Frozen. Each type of tofu comes in 6 pieces. The Greentea tofu have a nice colour but is quite bland on the flavour, the frozen tofu on the another hand is pretty interesting and easier to consume since it does not break away when cooked in the soup.

Live Tiger Prawn ($18) – The prawn served here are indeed fresh and very much alive. Diners who hate to get their hands dirtied from peeling prawn shells can rejoice. The waitresses here provide shell peeling service by removing the body shell on your behalf. Now all you need to do is just dip, wait for it to cook, and eat.

Beef Lamb Platter ($38) – Red meat lovers can order this three tier platter consisting of two types of beef and one type of lamb slices.

Fresh Live Seabass ($45) / Red Snapper ($55) – The fishes are super fresh and sliced to perfection for hotpot. The Seabass slices were one of my favourite dishes for the meal, the presentation alone was mouth-watering enough.

Homemade Assorted Treasure Balls ($16) – Pork, prawn, chicken and squid balls. Just as it appears to you, these handmade balls are equally smooth to the bite and very tasty. I could easily consume two portion of these assorted balls and still not get tired of it.

Chinese Sausage Claypot Rice (small, $12) – This dish fell short of expectation, both the chinese sausage and roasted pork belly were a tad too oily and salty for my liking. For those who love the layer of crusty, slightly charred rice at the bottom of the pot, the waitress will take them out piece by piece and serve it to you. Crusty rice pieces; I love them too because of the crisp!

With the idea to cultivate “Work, Eat and Drink” culture in one location, Fu Lin Men Dou Lao is a three level high restaurant that offers different sizes of VIP rooms suitable for big occasions and events.
